When I was born, the state had issued my birth certificate, a green booklet with a hammer and sickle. In 1991 the state on my birth certificate vanished. Just a few years earlier, this seemed impossible—the Soviet system appeared troubled but unshakeable, with its ideology deeply embedded in institutions, education, and daily life. But when the architecture of belief failed, the entire system collapsed in months. Belief systems don’t fail because their values are wrong. They fail because their structure can’t carry those values through change.

Consider how different organizations handle "quality." A traditional manufacturer structures quality as rigid rules and inspections—every deviation requires approval from multiple levels. When problems arise, they add more rules. The system becomes defensive and bureaucratic. Contrast this with the classic example of the opposite: Toyota structures quality as a flexible network of continuous improvement where every worker can stop the production line if they see an issue, and problems are solved at the source. The system becomes collaborative and innovative.

But flexibility without structure is just as dangerous. A startup that values "innovation" but has no core principles becomes a chaotic collection of random experiments. The system becomes scattered and directionless. Both rigidity and chaos are failure modes. The challenge is finding the sweet spot—enough structure to maintain identity, enough flexibility to adapt.

Belief systems have architecture. Some are built like fortresses—thick walls, narrow entrances, designed to keep things out. Others are built like gardens—open spaces with clear paths, designed to grow and adapt. The fortress is sturdy, but can't change without some walls being torn down. The garden grows organically while maintaining its character, but there is little to nothing preventing someone from just trampling over all the flower beds. The emergent behavior is how beliefs are connected, not what they contain. Change the architecture, and you change the system's behavior.

We expect tight coherence to win. In practice, the systems that endure are the ones whose story keeps making just enough sense as the world shifts, and not necessarily the most coherent in a classical sense. Credibility isn’t ornamentation, and neither is it a silver bullet—it’s a capability. It lowers the cost of working together and makes updates adoptable.

Three primitives govern how belief moves and stays itself—Repeaters, Jitter, Anchors (R/J/A). Anchors are the core commitments that preserve identity and prevent drift. Jitter is channel noise—variation that can be productive or destructive depending on how it's managed. Repeaters are the people, institutions, and mechanisms that carry, defend, and propagate the story—teachers, mentors, editors, community leaders, media outlets, social networks, and the psychological mechanisms that make beliefs self-reinforcing. R/J/A shapes both meaning and reach; change any one, and the system updates not just what it says, but how it survives.

The process is a continuous chain of replication and transformations: belief moves as air vibrations, becomes electrical signals in neural pathways, transforms into matter reconfiguration (keyboard presses), flows through silicon and copper as electrons, emerges as light on screens, and converts back to neural signals in other minds. Each transition introduces its own jitter—some clean, some noisy—and the substance must remain coherent despite this accumulating substrate noise.

The Right Kind of Specificity: Anchors That Endure

Every resilient system needs anchors—the core principles, institutions, works of art that give it identity and prevent it from drifting aimlessly. Think of anchors as the foundation stones of a belief system: they're what you can always refer to when things get confusing, what you use to evaluate new ideas, and what keeps the system from becoming unrecognizable to itself. But the crucial insight is that anchors need the right kind of specificity across multiple dimensions.

Commitment specificity is about how clearly you define what you're committed to. Are you committed to "quality" (vague) or "evidence-based decision making" (specific)? Application scope is about how broadly or narrowly you apply your principles. Do they work for any situation, or only for specific contexts? Method flexibility is about how adaptable your implementation is. Can you use new tools and techniques, or are you locked into old ways?

Let's take a look at the scientific method. Its anchors are specific in their commitment—empirical testing, peer review, falsifiability—but general in their application scope—they work for any field, any question, any new discovery. The implementation is flexible in methods—new experimental techniques, statistical frameworks, and technologies constantly emerge. This multi-dimensional specificity is what makes science resilient. When new evidence appears—like quantum mechanics or the human genome—the system can incorporate these findings without losing its fundamental identity. The anchors are specific enough to provide clear direction, but general enough to handle new contexts. Because of all of the above, the scientific method proves to be a great (though imperfect) example of a system that can adapt while maintaining high coherence.

Compare this to a system that bets on a very different kind of strategy, like the Soviet Union's Marxism-Leninism. The commitment was specific—"Marxism-Leninism"—but the application was also rigidly specific to every aspect of life, leaving no room for interpretation or adaptation. When circumstances changed, the system couldn't adapt because it had no general principles to fall back on. But also, here's the crucial distinction: hardness and brittleness are not the same thing. A system can be extremely hard (rigid, uncompromising) while still being resilient rather than brittle. North Korea's system is incredibly hard—it's rigid, uncompromising, and resistant to external pressure. But it's also surprisingly resilient because it found the totalitarian Goldilocks zone with relentlessly uncompromising anchors exercising unparalleled repeater and jitter control.

When Gorbachev introduced glasnost (openness/transparency), he was trying to graft controlled jitter onto a system that had accumulated decades of contradictions in its rigid mode, most of which were just papered over. The Soviet system had been built around rigid information control, centralized decision-making, and suppression of dissent—but over time, this rigidity had created a growing backlog of unresolved tensions, suppressed problems, and systemic contradictions. The Soviet system was sustainable in a strictly systemic sense—the cost of system maintenance and perpetuation has been externalized on to individuals, in the shape of their lack of human rights, freedom of expression, association etc. Suddenly introducing variation without the architectural capacity to process it destabilized the system by shifting the responsibility to adapt on to the system itself. But the system couldn't do that because it had no quality gates, integration standards, or rollback mechanisms for handling the explosion of new ideas and criticisms that glasnost unleashed. It's a perfect example of how accumulated contradictions in a rigid system become explosive when jitter is introduced too rapidly without the capacity to process it.

The core principle is that anchors that lead to long-term sustainability are specific about what you're committed to, general about how to apply it, and flexible about the exact methods. They provide clear direction while allowing adaptation to new contexts. But they can be extremely hard in their commitment while remaining resilient in their architecture.

This is why successful belief systems often state principles in general terms rather than specific rules. "Treat others as you would like to be treated" is specific in its commitment to reciprocity but general in its application. "Never speak to someone of a different caste" is specific in both commitment and application, making it unable to adapt.

The Engine of Adaptation: Harnessing the Power of Managed Jitter

While anchors provide stability, systems also need mechanisms to harness the sources of variance, whether intentional or not. This is the engine that drives adaptation and prevents the system from becoming trapped in local optima.

The Linux Kernel development process provides a great example. Thousands of developers have thousands of individual experiences, each with their own unique perspective. They contribute code from around the world, introducing massive potential variation into the system. But this variation is managed through a stable core of artifacts and practices actuated through maintainers who review, test, and integrate changes—the jitter itself needs anchors: quality gates, integration standards, testing protocols, and rollback mechanisms. The system can adapt rapidly to new hardware, new use cases, and new technologies while maintaining stability and reliability.

Compare this to a system that smothers jitter—like a traditional waterfall development process where every change must go through a rigid approval hierarchy. The system becomes slow to adapt, bureaucratic and risk-averse, unable to respond to changing conditions. Or compare this to a system with uncontrolled jitter—like the "love locks" phenomenon, where couples attach locks to bridges without any coordination or oversight. What started as a beautiful public art interaction became a structural problem, forcing cities to remove locks and implement management systems. The system became chaotic and potentially dangerous.

The fundamental lesson is that successful systems need both variation and QA. The variation ensures the system can explore new possibilities and adapt to changing conditions. The QA ensures that the variation is productive rather than destructive.

This is why successful organizations often have mechanisms for controlled experimentation—skunkworks projects, innovation labs, or simply a culture that encourages trying new approaches while maintaining core standards. The system becomes both stable and adaptive, capable of maintaining identity while exploring new possibilities.

Repeaters: The People and Channels That Carry the Story

Belief moves through whatever channels are most effective at propagating it. Repeaters are teachers, mentors, editors, maintainers, community leaders, media outlets, social networks, and the psychological mechanisms that make beliefs self-reinforcing—the people, institutions, and channels that circulate the canonicals and help newcomers acquire the creed.

From a systems perspective, the question of whether people "choose" their actions or are "determined" by external forces is irrelevant. What matters is that with enough effort and persistence, you can reliably shift probability distributions towards producing the behavioral outcomes you want. The question of exactly how much you are in control of your own actions is secondary to an intelligence operative, what matters to them is how many people think a certain way after being exposed to certain information over a period of time. This is why I'd like to keep focus on effectiveness rather than intention—the system doesn't care about philosophy, it only cares about what works.

Effective repeaters maintain stable probability distributions. They compress the creed into memorable canonicals and expand it into clear examples: a repeater might create a work of art that becomes an anchor (with a dash of jitter), or serve as a high-fidelity news source that propagates selectively with minimal jitter. They steelman criticism, route disputes to the right gate, and publish visible corrections so the update propagates. Ineffective repeaters are just that—they are passive observers, though this kind of true passivity is rare. Even a hermit living off the grid has some kind of contact with the outside world, and acts as a repeater of their own life choices.

Design levers live in plain sight: who gets the mic, what they're trained to do, how often they show up, where feedback goes, and what are the consequences of propagating a given kind of information. Selection means choosing repeaters you'd trust with a confused newcomer, and not just the loudest voice.

Dynamic Equilibrium: How the Scientific Method Balances Anchors and Jitter

The scientific method provides the clearest example of how to achieve dynamic equilibrium between anchors and jitter. It shows how a system can maintain unwavering commitment to core principles while constantly adapting to new evidence and discoveries.

The anchors of science are rigid in their essence: empirical testing, peer review, falsifiability, and the commitment to evidence-based knowledge. These principles never change, regardless of the field or the specific question being investigated. But the implementation is flexible: new experimental methods, new statistical techniques, new fields of inquiry, and new technologies constantly emerge.

The jitter comes from the decentralized nature of scientific inquiry. Millions of researchers around the world pursue their own questions, test their own hypotheses, and publish their own findings. This creates massive variation in the system. But this variation is managed through peer review, replication studies, and the gradual accumulation of evidence that either supports or refutes new claims.

The result is a system that can adapt rapidly to new discoveries while maintaining its core identity. When new evidence appears—like the discovery of quantum mechanics or the mapping of the human genome—the scientific community can incorporate these findings without losing its fundamental commitment to empirical testing and evidence-based knowledge.

But science isn't perfect. The same incentives that drive progress—publish or perish, funding cycles, career advancement—also create pathologies. Researchers chase trendy topics, journals favor novel findings over replications, and the pressure to produce results can lead to cutting corners. These flaws aren't so much bugs in the system, as they are features of any human endeavor.

The engine is visible self-correction, not perfection. When errors are found, they're fixed in public and the update is propagated. That's how a system stays itself while changing.

Every Move Lands Twice

In any belief system, repeaters carry ideas, jitter explores new forms, and anchors stabilize identity; healthy systems balance all three, and every move lands twice: first, in the substance network—what ideas mean and how they cohere—and second, in the substrate network—how ideas travel and where they land. The same architectural primitives govern both dimensions.

This isn't just about building good systems—it's about building systems that can compete. Belief systems don't exist in isolation. They compete for attention, adoption, and dominance. The good news is that the same principles that make a system internally resilient also make it externally competitive. A system with strong anchors can defend against hostile narratives. A system with managed jitter can adapt faster than rigid competitors. A system with healthy repeaters can outmaneuver systems that can't propagate effectively.

Every belief system—from corporate cultures to political movements to religious traditions—is fighting for survival in a landscape where other systems are doing the same. Systems gain edge through replication speed (memorable canonicals, low-friction rituals), conversion funnels (clear onramps and defaults), retention (community, real benefits, identity fusion), adaptation rate (managed jitter with corrections), and defense (pre-bunking and steelmanned counters). Substrate asymmetries—distribution pipes, funding, legal shields—often decide fights between equally coherent stories. And some systems metabolize attack into cohesion; direct confrontation can strengthen what you're trying to weaken. This is why proactive management isn't optional. You can't just let your anchors drift, your jitter run wild, or your repeaters decay. Other systems will exploit those weaknesses, they will absorb your anchors, manage your jitter and use your repeaters for their own propagation. Choose your posture: protocol vs platform, sect vs coalition, simplicity vs explanatory debt. Measure what matters (propagation, churn, correction half-life), and bind competition to a moral anchor: win in ways that increase human flourishing, not just system survival.

This is the ultimate promise of understanding emergent organizational patterns: not just to see the architecture, but to become capable of redesigning it. The future belongs to systems that can manage both dimensions proactively. Not because it's nice to have, but because the alternative is being outcompeted by systems that do.

Quick health tests: Can you state a three-sentence spine—who we are, what we do, why it works? Are there 10–15 canonicals everyone can cite? Can insiders name the usual counter-arguments and calmly rebut them? Do experiments run behind a gate with a clear adopt-or-rollback rule? When criticized, do you get clearer or only louder?

From Inhabitants of the Graph to Its Architects

We have examples of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Roman Republic, and they are eerily similar to what we're seeing today. Can we avoid going down the same paths?

The answer depends on whether we can recognize the emergent patterns in our own systems before it's too late. The Commonwealth's Liberum Veto system worked brilliantly during its rise, but became a weapon of paralysis as neighboring powers grew stronger. The Roman Republic's refusal to reform its political institutions as the empire expanded led to a century of civil wars. In each case, the system's stabilizing mechanisms—the feedback loops that had created success—became the very forces that prevented adaptation.

Today, we face similar challenges. Our democratic institutions, market systems, and social structures are all belief graphs that have evolved over decades or centuries. They're not just collections of rules and procedures—they're living networks with their own behavior. And like all living things, they must adapt or die.

The post-WWII liberal capitalist world order didn't just fade away—it was systematically undermined by Russian influence operations that attacked both substance and substrate. The coherent belief system that had dominated global politics for decades was fragmented through coordinated attacks on its core ideas and distribution channels. Now we have "tradwife" in the Cambridge Dictionary, a sign not only of how thoroughly the old order's coherence has been replaced by fragmented, incoherent narratives, but by how it is being supplanted with something else entirely. This happened in years, not decades, showing that proactive management isn't optional—it's the difference between living within a preferred system and watching it get systematically dismantled by adversaries who understand how to attack both the ideas and the channels that carry them.

The fundamental truth is that successful systems don't just happen—they're designed. They're the result of conscious choices about structure, incentives, and feedback loops. They're built by people who understand that the ghost is the graph; that the emergent behavior is the system, and who design the system accordingly. Systems have seasons: early on, build bridges and borrow what already works; in the midgame, co‑opt what’s compatible; when ossification creeps in, prune brittle rules but keep the creed.

The Responsibility of Building Belief Systems Worthy of Us

The challenge is that we're not just designing for ourselves. We're designing for future generations who will inherit the belief graphs we create. The Russian template, the scientific method, the democratic process—these are all belief systems that will outlive their creators and shape the world for decades or centuries to come. This is why understanding how templates compete and evolve is so crucial—the systems we build today will determine the competitive landscape of tomorrow.

This means we have a responsibility to build systems that serve human flourishing rather than their own survival. Systems that are resilient rather than rigid, adaptive rather than chaotic. Systems that can evolve with changing circumstances while maintaining their core values.

The good news is that we have examples of what works. The scientific method shows how to balance stability with adaptation. The most trustworthy institutions publish their corrections—versioned, dated, and easy to find. Toyota's production system demonstrates how to create quality through continuous improvement rather than rigid control. The internet's open protocols illustrate how to build systems that can evolve transparently and collaboratively.

We are not passive inhabitants of the systems around us. We are both their constituent parts as well as their architects. The question is whether we will build belief systems worthy of us—systems that serve human needs rather than their own survival, that adapt to changing circumstances rather than becoming trapped in destructive patterns, that create the conditions for human flourishing rather than just perpetuating themselves.

But with all of this considered, we are left with a few practical questions: we've been relying on media literacy, fact-checking, and individual discernment as our defense against the threat. Was that enough? In my opinion, evidently not. Do we expect everyone to become a cognitive psychology specialist, a graph theory aficionado, and a social media strategist all in one? That's unrealistic, and also unfair—we don't task people with procuring their own nuclear warheads to deter external threats. The level of coordination necessary to counter an adversary with state-level resources is beyond any individual. So what is the solution then? Do we think central management of these concerns is acceptable or preferable? The answers are far from obvious, as different considerations start clashing immediately after these questions are posed, but the act of asking itself forces us to confront the reality that understanding the problem isn't enough—we need new approaches.
